Team Canada set for 2016 IMMAF World Championships

The Canadian Combat Alliance (CCA) National Amateur MMA Team Trials were held in Lethbridge, Alberta on May 27th, 28th and 29th for selection of Team Canada to participate at the 2016 IMMAF World Amateur MMA Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, taking place July 4th – 10th, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in conjunction with the 5th Annual UFC International Fight Week and Fan Expo. The Canadian National Team Trials were held by the Canadian Combat Alliance (CCA), Canada’s National Governing Body for MMA under IMMAF. The Trials were hosted by the Alberta Amateur MMA Association (Provincial Member Federation of CCA) under the auspices of the City of Lethbridge Sports Commission. Athletes who competed at the 2016 Canadian Trials came from the Provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Onatio, Sakatchewan and Quebec. The 2016 Trials showcased the tremendous and talented athletes of the Canadian Amateur MMA scene. Team Canada are looking to better their results at the 2016 IMMAF World Championships, after placing 3rd in the overall medal table at the World Championships in 2015 with 2x Golds, 1x Silver and 1x Bronze , plus 2x 4th places.

The Canadian Finals on May 29th showcased spectacular matches by the 2015 Team Canada members including World Bronze Medalist Sambath Kuhn (135lbs) and World Silver Medalist Alexander Martinez (170lbs). Victory for the Alberta duo in their respective divisions secured their return to Las Vegas. In contrast, 2015 Team Canada members Jessie Atwell (125lbs) and Dylan Lielke (155lbs) were narrowly defeated in the Finals by newcomers Jarrett Vornbrock ( 125lbs) and John Nguyen (155lbs). At the conclusion of the 2016 Canadian Team Trials, CCA President Rohit Seth stated: “Canada is at a new juncture in the Sport of Amateur MMA. We have qualified the most advanced Team yet to compete at the IMMAF Worlds. I congratulate the hard efforts of all Canadian Amateur MMA athletes and I wish Team Canada the very best of luck in their anticipated victory at the IMMAF World Championships, 2016. “My commendation to the Board of Directors of CCA on their committment, perseverance and support in holding excellent 2016 National Championships.
