IMMAF veterans Mlambo and Kavanagh complete impressive pro debuts at BAMMA 22

IMMAF Amateur World Championships veterans Frans Mlambo and Sinead Kavanagh (pictured) successfully made their transition to professional competition last weekend at BAMMA 22 in Dublin. The Irish duo were both in action this past July at the IMMAF World Championships of Amateur MMA in Las Vegas, USA as their team mate, Conor McGregor prepared for his UFC 189 bout. The SBG Ireland products, under coach John Kavanagh, each claimed a podium position with Sinead Kavanagh taking silver in the Women’s featherweight category while Frans Mlambo secured gold in the Men’s featherweight division. On September 19 Kavanagh made history at BAMMA 22 by competing in the promotion’s first ever women’s contest. Facing off against Dutch veteran Hatice Ozyurt, Kavanagh countered a spinning-back-fist attempt from her opponent by landing a stern right hand and following up for the TKO finish at just 17 seconds into the opening round. After being introduced as the IMMAF amateur world champion by the BAMMA MC, Mlambo took on fellow Irishman Darren O’Gorman and also claimed a first round stoppage. O’Gorman found himself on the back foot as Mlambo chased him down with a flurry of punches capped with a powerful right hand that sent his opponent to the canvas. Working with Safe MMA -Ireland, BAMMA 22 also saw IMMAF member, the Irish Amateur Pankration Association, shadow sanction the event – as a first in Ireland. Since the IMMAF World Championships in July, three other champions have announced the move to professional competition with scheduled bouts fast approaching. With an amateur record of 25-1 and two IMMAF World Championship gold medals in the Men’s bantamweight division, Jose Torres became the first amateur fighter to join standout US promotion Titan FC with an 0-0 record. Also a member of Bahrain’s KHK fight team alongside Mlambo, he makes his professional debut with Titan FC on December 18.
