Singapore – UFC®, the world’s premier mixed martial arts (MMA) organization partnered with the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) to bring its inaugural Asian Open Championships to Singapore. This tournament took place during UFC Fight Night Singapore’s week long fan activities leading up to its highly anticipated live event at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Saturday June 17, 2017.
The 2017 IMMAF Asian Open Championships of Amateur MMA took place from June 12-16 at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. This was IMMAF’s first Open Championships in Asia supported by the UFC’s on-going commitment to developing MMA in the region. Amateur athletes from all over Asia and across the world were invited to participate and show their skills in front of fans. This event was free and open to the public.
“We are excited to partner again with UFC for our first championships in Asia and grateful for their ongoing support,” IMMAF President Kerrith Brown said “Asia is a spiritual home to many martial arts traditions, and renowned as a continent for its talent. We look forward to welcoming Asian national teams in full force, including IMMAF debutants from Thailand, China and Singapore itself. I urge competitors to contact their national federations to earn a spot on the world’s premier Amateur MMA platform.”
IMMAF events have boasted up to 200 participants from up to 30 countries and 5 continents worldwide. The Open events invite participation from affiliated national teams world over, but bring the opportunity to compete to different continental regions – this time to the doorstep of 13 member nations in Asia. Weight categories run from strawweight (female) to super heavyweight (male), and participants compete under IMMAF Amateur MMA rules. Registered participants will each receive a pair of tickets to UFC Fight Night Singapore: Holm vs. Correia and the first 165 entrants to register will receive a free UFC Fight Pass subscription.
“We are thrilled that IMMAF’s very first Asian Open Championships will take place during UFC Singapore’s fight week,” UFC Senior Vice President of International and Content, Joe Carr, said. “We’re looking forward to giving fans a memorable and premium experience in June that will culminate with the best fight card the UFC has brought to Asia in years.”
