World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Publishes 2023 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has published the 2023 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods, which enters into force on 1 January 2023.

Athletes, support personnel and coaches can start preparations to be compliant with the new list. Players are responsible for any prohibited substances found in their bodies, as well as prohibited methods found to have been used.

Athletes who have a legitimate medical reason for using a prohibited substance or method on the list can apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) via their National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO), or if a member of IMMAF’s Registered Testing Pool, to IMMAF.

As a WADA Code signatory, the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) supports all changes made by WADA to uphold the sport’s integrity and keep the sport clean. IMMAF is the only governing body for MMA with WADA signatory status and has adhered to WADA-compliant anti-doping regulations for seven years.

Modifications in the 2023 list include changes in sections 4, 6, 7 & 9. A full list of changes can be found here

Since receiving WADA Code Signatory Status, IMMAF has been actively testing athletes, both in and out of competition.

Commitment to educating athletes on anti-doping has also been a priority. Education resources and webpages with key anti-doping information were made available to all members, athletes and coaches.

During the 2022 Youth World Championship, an Anti-Doping education session was organised for the Youth A athletes (16–17 years old) on registration day.

At a national level, federations have actively provided education to all their members. In July, Anti-Doping Manager Sophie Mueller was invited by the Tajikistan MMA Federation (TAJMMAF) to host a seminar, which was supported by the Tajikistan National Olympic Committee.

In the last year, Anti-Doping Whereabouts was launched via the IMMAF Registered Testing Pool (RTP) which consists of IMMAF senior top-ranked athletes, to manage their Whereabouts information in the ADAMS system and continuously educate them.
