The French Polynesia national team secured its first ever victory on the international amateur MMA platform, on day 1 (March 6) of the 2020 IMMAF Oceania Open Championships in Australia.
The debut of French Polynesia under the IMMAF banner comes following recognition of The Polynesian Federation of Wrestling and Associated Disciplines (FPLAJDA) as a member of the IMMAF, announced last year on November 11.
The symbolic first triumph for the national team was secured in the very first bout of the day by men’s bantamweight (61.2 kg/135 lbs) athlete, Keoni Terorotua (main picture). The 22-year-old bested Levi Hawkes of New Zealand, a veteran of the 2018 Junior World Championships and 2019 Oceania Open. The bout was decided by a split-decision on the judge’s scorecards.
Terorotua’s team mates, Aremiti Tinirau (men’s welterweight) and Michael Lisan (middleweight) were also in action, but were defeated after going the distance against experienced Australians Corey Reeves and Loni Doyle Filimoehala who both earned unanimous decision wins for the home nation.

The International Mixed Martial Arts Federation’s nation vs nation, MMA tournament plays out from 6– 8 March at the Gold Coast Recreation Centre from 10:30 hrs daily (AEST / GMT + 10). Sunday’s finals will be available to watch for free at IMMAF.TV.
