Following Monday’s registration deadline, this year’s Africa Open is confirmed to be the biggest to date, enjoying the highest level of participation since the inaugural 2016 event, including a significant increase of competing African nations in addition to international competitors from as far as the United States and Australia. Making history for Mauritius will be Terence Nagamootoo, representing the island nation in the Men’s lightweight (-155lb) division. The IMMAF Africa Open Championships return to the Brakpan Sports Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 24 to 26 May. Situated off the southeast coast of Africa, Mauritius is one of the continent’s longest standing members to IMMAF through the Mauritius Mixed Martial Arts Federation. The nation’s governing for MMA receives support from the Mauritius Olympic Committee and has been active in its efforts for national development of the sport. In 2015, IMMAF founder August Wallen visited to host an MMA training seminar and spoke at an Olympic Committee press event. In July of 2017, IMMAF board member Raymond Phillips and certified IMMAF official Ferdinand Basson, visited the island as the Mauritius MMA Federation hosted its first national referee and judges course with assistance from MMA South Africa, in addition to a national youth development competition.
