Federation: Icelandic MMA Federation Number of competitors: 1 Another nation making its World Championship debut is Iceland, having proved majorly successful at last year’s European Open. The Iceland team took the 2015 IMMAF European Open Championships by storm last November. The small troupe consisted of competitors from the country’s renowned Mjolnir MMA, Iceland’s sole MMA gym and home to the UFC’s Gunnar Nelson. The team successfully captured three European Open medals, including two Golds. Now set to turn professional on UFC Fight Pass’ Invicta FC, 125lb female fighter Sunna Rannveig Davidsdottir was one of the glimmering stars in Walsall, England. The Icelandic sensation finished Flyweight tournament favourite Anja Saxmark (Sweden) in the finals, in convincing fashion. 170lb Welterweight standout, Bjarki Palsson, also claimed Gold with a storm of victories whilst Heavyweight Petur Oskarsson finished in third place. For the 2016 IMMAF World Championships, Iceland provides a sole competitor in 28-year- old Bjarni Kristjansson who will work to establish himself in the Light-Heavyweight division. Of course, there is some pressure on Kristjansson as his country’s only representative, but under the tutelage of Mjolnir there’s no doubt he will give Iceland a great account.
