· 27TH – 28TH FEBRUARY 2016, LONDON The International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) hosted its launch Medical Committee Conference last weekend in Greenwich, London (UK) as the UFC took over the nearby O2 Arena for ‘UFC Fight Night: Silva vs Bisping’. The conference included meetings for the formation of the new IMMAF Medical Committee and addressed the establishment of IMMAF medical standards for MMA. The role of athlete clearance services by third party, independent medical services provider Safe MMA were reviewed; and IMMAF’s proposed MyNextMatch® medical passport software system was presented. Additionally, IMMAF Anti-doping consultant Michele Verroken and panel representatives met with the new Medical Committee to discuss topics of common interest around Anti-doping. The interim chairman mandated with the formation of the new IMMAF Medical Committee is Professor Dan Healy of the Republic of Ireland. Other committee doctors that participated were Dr. Randa Basharon (USA) and Dr. David Wang (USA). The medical advisors were selected from recommendations made by IMMAF’s member national federations. Other key participants in the conference weekend were Safe MMA founding doctor Dr. Jack Kreindler, Safe MMA spokesperson and UKMMAF board representative, Dr. Maeve Rodgers, alongside the IMMAF CEO Densign White, President Kerrith Brown, board member Bertrand Amoussou and the IMMAF administration team. ABOUT PROFESSOR HEALY [caption id="attachment_8710" align="alignright" width="300"] Professor Dan Healy[/caption] Professor Dan Healy (PhD, MRCPS, MRCPI, BMedSc hons, MB BCh BAO hons) is a consultant neurologist who currently serves as National Speciality Director at the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin, Ireland. He is Professor of Neurology at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, Consultant Neurologist at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. His clinical interest lies in movement disorders, genetic diseases of the nervous system and sports medicine while his research interest is the study of human movement using genetic and cell based approaches. Professor Healy has been a passionate advocate of fighter medical safety in grassroots MMA, founding Safe MMA-Ireland with athlete Aisling Daly in 2013. Professor Healy organized and personally funded a free ‘Injuries in MMA’ seminar day for fighters in February 2015 at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin which, with the support of coach John Kavanagh, attracted around 400 competitors and featured world experts in weight-cutting, combat sports injuries and Anti-doping. Healy has been an active political spokesperson for safety and regulation in the sport and played a key role in stalling the lobby to ban MMA in the Republic of Ireland, with a political turning point being Senator Catherine Noone’s talk at the ‘Injuries in MMA’ event. ABOUT DR. BASCHARON [caption id="attachment_8711" align="alignright" width="300"] Dr. Randa Bascharon[/caption] Dr. Randa Bascharon is a board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine. As founder and president of the Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute of Las Vegas, she has accrued vast experience in sports performance and has worked with professional, elite and amateur athletes. She is a member of the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians and has served ringside for clients that include ONE Fighting Championship, Tuff-N-Uff, USA Boxing, United States Mixed Martial Arts Federation and the National Muay Thai Association. She was the lead doctor for the 2014 and 2015 IMMAF World Championships in Las Vegas, and will be heading the medical team again in 2016. Dr. Bascharon’s sports medical experience also includes work with the USA Olympic Track and Field Trials, USA Olympic Women’s Basketball Selection Camp, USA Olympic Men’s Gymnastic National Championship, US Figure Skating Championship, All Star NBA Basketball Week, the Women’s Tennis Association, US Open Golf Tournament, National Basketball Association Pre-Draft Camp and the National Hockey League Summer Tournament. ABOUT DR. WANG David Wang (MD, MS) is Chief Medical Officer for the United States Mixed Martial Arts Federation (UMMAF) and a sports medicine physician with over 20 years of experience in caring for athletes and 15 looking after combat sports athletes. Specialising in nonsurgical techniques for musculoskeletal ailments, Wang has worked with athletes from novice through to Olympic level. Dr. Wang is the head team physician for Quinnipiac University, the U.S. Figure Skating national network and the medical director for KICK International (kick-boxing). Currently serving as Medical Director of a sports medicine facility and concussion clinic, Wang holds a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology and has a specialist understanding of sports and their unique training regimes. Dr. Wang has published numerous research articles in medical journals and his current research focuses on concussions and the various ways in which they affect the athlete. He received a grant from the U.S. Figure Skating Association to study the affects of spinning on cranial forces.
