We have been contacted by many of you in reaction to some rumors pertaining to the recognition of MMA by the IOC, such rumors being spread by GAMMA USA and possibly others after the UWW general assembly held on 27 October 2024 in Albania.
Even though we did not have access to UWW meeting or its minutes, we can clarify the following elements:
- UWW agenda pertained to the development of Pankration MMA, not of MMA as a specific discipline. Pankration MMA corresponds to the current Pankration Elite discipline, which is completely different from MMA.
- Pankration is not a discipline recognized by the IOC, neither in its Traditional form nor in its Elite format.
- MMA is not recognized by the IOC.
- The only discipline promoted by UWW that is part of the Olympic disciplines is traditional wrestling.
While we regret the confusion deliberately created by UWW and the misleading communication by GAMMA USA pertaining to UWW’s decisions, we must understand these facts as they are. Our sport is a leading and successful one, envied by others who may be tempted to use the fame of MMA to delay the regress of their own discipline.
Always for the avoidance of doubt, the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) remains the only International Federation truly representing MMA. Claims by others do not change facts. The process of recognition of IMMAF within AIMS is on its way. A clear recognition of IMMAF as a full-fleged member of AIMS and MMA as a discipline will close any debates and finally conclude years of intense work to develop our sport.
Last week, SportAccord confirmed and launched the AIMS Membership Application process, outlining the relevant rules and procedures. We have already submitted the acknowledgement form and our letter of intent, signaling our commitment to proceed with the application. Our formal application will be filed by early next year, a decision being expected during the second quarter of 2025.
We look forward to meeting you in Tashkent at the IMMAF General Assembly 9th November, where we will discuss this matter in greater detail.
With best regards,
Densign White MBE
IMMAF CEO
