The upsets flowed freely throughout Belgrade on the third day of competition for Juniors and Seniors at the 2024 IMMAF European Championships as France and Poland earned several big victories to get near the top of the ranking, which was occupied once again by Team Ukraine.
In the day’s first bout, Ireland’s Amy Scully, a Youth world champion suffered a minor upset at the hands of Julia Glaz (pictured), from Poland, who submitted Scully with a beautiful armbar in the beginning of their Junior Atomweight contest. It was the beginning of a huge day for Poland, who earned five more wins to position themselves near the top of rankings. Junior Light Heavyweight world silver medalist Lukasz Markowski booked a rematch with Ivan Poremchuk, by beating Bulgaria’s Petrov in mere 19 seconds in another huge result for Team Poland.
Another National Team with a great Day 3 was France. Building on from Day 2, the French were driven to success by the biggest upset of the tournament so far: Oceane Samson, who beat world champion Hanna Palmqvist via split decision, to set up a semifinal meeting with compatriot Mathilde Aschenbrenner, who took home a unanimous decision over Eabha Cruise, from Ireland.
Despite two tough setbacks with Scully and Cruise, Team Ireland moved forward with five wins, as Flobater Fares led the way in the Junior Bantamweight division, booking himself a spot on the final with victory over Tymur Kirahosiants. Jordan Scully (Junior Lightweight) and Kian McCarton (Senior Flyweight) also had relevant victories in their respective divisions.
Day 4 of the Juniors and Seniors competition of the European Championships will take place this Friday, April 5, and will feature the finals of the Junior brackets and semi-finals for the Seniors. The action will be LIVE from the IMMAF.tv starting at 11 AM, local Belgrade time.
