Registration has opened today for national teams wishing to compete in the IMMAF Africa Championships, hosted by Mixed Martial Arts South Africa (MMASA) and under the auspices of the World Anti-Doping Agency, in Johannesburg from 28 to 30 April. The deadline for entries is 25th March 2022.
Athletes wishing to participate should contact their IMMAF affiliated, national federation.
The fourth edition of IMMAF’s Africa Championships and first tournament on the continent since 2019 will be held in partnership with the EFC Performance Institute and broadcast live on immaf.tv.
IMMAF’s return to Africa demonstrates the world governing body’s ongoing commitment to the development of grassroots MMA in the region. Affiliated African nations include Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tunisia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as IMMAF has continued its expansion throughout the pandemic. The 2022 Africa Championships will be IMMAF’s first closed tournament on the continent, open only to amateur athletes from African nations.
South Africa homegrown EFC is renowned globally for its live, professional MMA events. With over 120 contracted athletes on its roster, including IMMAF veterans, the promoter has sold out some of the biggest arenas on the continent.
IMMAF President Kerrith Brown said: “We welcome athletes from across our affiliated nations in Africa to come to Johannesburg and test their skills on the world’s premier amateur MMA platform. Team South Africa is a top-ranking team that made its mark on the IMMAF global circuit prior to the pandemic and will be looking to reinstate itself with a strong comeback. We now have new talent pools in Algeria, Angola, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe and Zambia whose athletes will surely up the game as they bring a new mix of styles to the table. IMMAF’s Africa Championships provides not just a developmental opportunity for athletes but also an international stage for Africa’s rising stars.”
