Photo by Anja Dorny. By IMMAF.org lead writer, Jorden Curran Amateur MMA veteran Julia Dorny this week travels to Wrocław, Poland, to represent the German Sumo team at the 2017 World Games. The prestigious, international multi-sport event takes place every four years, one year following the Summer Olympics, and consists of sports and disciplines which are not currently contested at the Olympics Games. Martial arts featured at the World Games include Sumo, Ju-Jitsu, Karate and Muay Thai with Kickboxing also featuring as an invitation sport. The World Games are organised and governed by the International World Games Association (IWGA) and are recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). 
As a Sumo competitor in the -65kg (143lbs) division, Dorny won the German national championship and last year finished 5th at the European Championships (pictured above), contributing to an overall bronze medal finish for the German team. Dorny went on to place 5th at the 2016 World Championships in Mongolia less than three weeks following the 2016 IMMAF World Championships where she earned the Women’s featherweight silver medal in Las Vegas, USA. A top 10 finish at this year’s European Sumo Championships in Georgia was met with reward as Dorny found herself nominated to compete at the 2017 World Games and she is now set to compete in the Women’s lightweight category on July 22 and the Women’s open-weight category on July 23. In 2016 Dorny secured silver at both the IMMAF World Championships and European Open Championships and is currently the second highest ranked competitor in the Women’s featherweight rankings.
