Under the CAPMMA (Comissão Atlética Portuguesa de Mixed Martial Arts), Portugal’s MMA team has participated in every IMMAF World Championship and European Open since launch, namely the 2014, 2015 and 2016 World Championships in Las Vegas and the 2015 European Open in Birmingham, UK. However, the team is yet to earn a coveted IMMAF medal. The 2016 European Open brings fresh opportunities for the team as two representatives will be competing for Portugal –  Milton Mateus in the Men’s Welterweight category and Gonçalo Formiga in the Men’s Lightweight division. Mateus previously competed in the preliminaries of the 2015 IMMAF European Open and 2016 World Championships, while Formiga makes his IMMAF debut. The team will be led by Executive Director and established Head Coach, Luis Barneto. With plenty of experience of the IMMAF tournament environment behind him, coach Barneto will be looking to see his team make a dent among the 2016 European medallists.
