With international media attention focused on the sensational performances of the Cameroonian born UFC Heavyweight World Champion Francis Ngannou, it’s time to shine a light on the excellent work being done to develop the base of MMA in Cameroon.
Under the shrewd stewardship of Olomo Guy Bertrand, President of the IMMAF Member federation in Cameroon, the grass roots scene is thriving.
The night before Francis Ngannou took to the UFC Octagon for his second round defeat of Stipe Miocic, the national MMA league of Cameroon organized a return to competition with CFC12 (Cameroon Fighting Championship) on March 27.
13 fights were held at Bali Douala. Originally, the competition was scheduled to be held in Bonanjo at the post office Esplanade but due to the ongoing Covid restrictions, it was agreed that the competitions would be relocated, and held behind closed doors, to respect the measures published by the Cameroonian government to restrict the spread of the virus.
IMMAF President Kerrith Brown said:
“We are delighted with the development of MMA in Africa and the hard work being done by our member federations in that region. Although the event in Cameroon was, unfortunately held without fans, it offered a competitive opportunity to the talented group of athletes who have been starved of events due to Covid. We are all looking forward to seeing these athletes compete at IMMAF Championships.”
