– PLAYA DEL CARMEN – CANCUN, MEXICO
– 21 – 23 MAY
The International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) is pleased to announce its 2020 IMMAF Pan American Open Championships, as registration opens for Athletes and National Teams today. The three-day MMA tournament will take place in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico from 21 – 23 May (with athlete check-in and the Tournament Draw on 20 May). Those wishing to compete should contact their National Federation for information.
The Playa Del Carmen is a coastal resort town along Mexico’s Caribbean shoreline, neighbouring the more well-known holiday destination of Cancun. It is renowned for its palm-lined beaches and coral reefs.
Hosted by FAMMEJL (the Mexican Federation of Mixed Martial Arts) at the BlueBay Grand Esmeralda hotel, the nations Continental Championship provides opportunity for Pan American athletes to experience international level competition close to home soil.
IMMAF’s Pan American member nations include Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, El Salvador, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States of America and Venezuela.
The United States has produced notable World Champions that include Jose Torres, Will Starks, Benjamin Bennett, Quitin Thomas and LaNeisha Vinson; while Team Canada has also enjoyed top level success with athletes that include Alexander Martinez and more recently, 2019 junior champion, Jett Grande. Michele Oliveira, Carlos Veras and Amanda Ribas have triumphed with Gold for Brazil; and host nation, Mexico has seen its women, in particular, scoop up World medals through Nadia Vera and Daniela Hernandez.
As an Open Championships, elite amateurs from around the World are welcomed to enter. Participation in IMMAF Continental Championships accrues ranking points for athletes and teams in the World Amateur MMA Rankings, with top performing athletes seeded for the end-of-year IMMAF World Championships.
FAMMEJL President, Raul Salas, said:
“We are very happy to be the host of this great event and will work to make your visit a fantastic and comfortable experience on the beautiful beaches of Cancun. MMA unites speakers of different languages, nations and will. War in the ring – Peace on earth.”
IMMAF President Kerrith Brown said:
“The Americas are the home to contemporary Unified Rules MMA and a hotbed of talent, from which we can expect to see new IMMAF stars emerge. The Pan Ams provide a fantastic opportunity for international athletes to test their skills, most particularly against college wrestlers and advanced BJJ practitioners. We expect the Pan Ams to increasingly grow in stature year on year and fast develop into one of IMMAF’s Tier 1 events: This Championships therefore offers a great opportunity for sponsors to engage early for preferential partnership deals and to become a part of the development of elite amateur and grass roots MMA across Pan America.”
