All India MMA Association outlines schedule for remainder of 2018

All India Mixed Martial Arts Association (AIMMAA) has outlined its remaining events schedule for the remainder of 2018. A successful first quarter saw the BodyPower India Open Championships in January, which drew over 300 participants, setting the tone for the year’s national circuit. AIMMAA followed up by sanctioning the biggest professional MMA show of the country – Super Fight League, entering into the second season of the promotion’s league system. The busy AIMMAA team continued its prolific presence throughout February and March before the next wave beginning in June with the Central/Western Zone Open Championships. The Bengaluru Open kicks off its third addition in July which in turn will be the platform for all amateur athletes vying for a spot on the AIMMAA Indian national team. The results will usher qualification for Team India with the opportunity to represent the country at the IMMAF Asian Open in Beijing, China. The Highlight event of the domestic year will be the 2018 AIMMAA Nationals, taking place in September and also serving as qualification for the eagerly anticipated 2018 IMMAF World Championships, returning to Bahrain in November. Team India aims to better its heroics of the 2017 IMMAF Worlds where Indian athletes advanced in historic fashion to the World Championships quarter-finals for the first time. Team achievements included amateur kickboxing specialist, Nishigandha Rao, winning a split-decision against Russian opponent Daria Sloviashchenkova to advance to the final-8 of the Women’s Flyweight tournament, plus Men’s Flyweight Shiva Raj who picked up decision victories over Roland Yaacoubian of Lebanon and Pakistan’s Irfan Ahmed. The national body stated: “AIMMAA is tirelessly working to get together the events calender and have some exciting plans for MMA athletes in India, including extensive training camps for Team India representatives. AIMMAA wishes to establish training camps for all those selected, in addition to athletes showing potential to represent India at events under IMMAF. With the increase of international events IMMAF is conducting, AIMMAA continues to support and stay busy by sending A, B and C teams spread across all events and rotated for International experience and high level competition.” The remainder of AIMMAA’s 2018 calendar includes: June 2018 – Western India Zonal Amateur MMA Championship.
