Federation: Belgium MMA Federation Number of competitors: 1 Travelling from Western Europe, from a country famous for its medieval towns and renaissance architecture, the Belgium Mixed Martial Arts Federation (BMMAF) has sent Featherweight Ulrich Agbessi on a maiden voyage in to IMMAF territory, to compete at the 2016 IMMAF World Championships of Amateur MMA. While BMMAF may be sending an untested IMMAF amateur, the fact should prove no deterrent to Agbessi. Their Belgium predecessor Salvatore Liga (pictured below) notably scored success in the 2014 IMMAF World Championships, his first major amateur Championship: In 2014, Liga soared to attaining a Bronze medal for Belgium – the country’s first ever significant amateur MMA achievement – when he defeated both America’s Max Spiller and Canada’s Steve Rossignol. Liga would go on to lose to Finnish fighter Jari Illikainen, who in the finals beat Sweden’s Joel Moyà Schöndorff to win Gold. If Team Belgium can draw inspiration from Liga, then it could be a very fruitful tournament for them. Since their opponents will be facing them with no prior expectation, this could make Agbessi very dangerous opponent in the 145lb Featherweight tournament.
