IMMAF veteran Julia Dorny wins European Sumo Bronze

dORNY JUDO MEDALIMMAF World Championships and European Open veteran Julia Dorny competed at the European Sumo Championships in Poland over the weekend of April 23. Representing her country on yet another international martial arts platform, the German competitor placed 5th in the -65kg (143lbs) division, and Germany as a National Team secured the Bronze medal position. In conjunction with her Amateur MMA career, Dorny is a black-belt competitor and coach in Judo. In addition to placing 5th at the German National Judo Championships, she was crowned National Champion in both MMA and Sumo in 2016. Dorny most recently travelled to the city of Leipzig on April 30 alongside her regional Judo team, Judo Club Wiesbaden, as competition continued in the German Judo Bundesliga.  In 1997 Dorny first started Judo at the age of seven. Seventeen years later this was followed by a her transition to MMA in 2014, and Sumo which she impressively began as recently as March of this year before winning the National title. Having already made a fast start with successful results on the National and European Sumo stage, Dorny explained to IMMAF.org the reasons for adding the extra discipline to her martial arts resume. “Honestly it was just for fun,” Dorny explained. “I kinda promised one of my very first Judo coaches to take part because he is involved in Sumo as well as in Judo. Then I won the tournament, became German champion and qualified for the Europeans and Worlds.” Dorny sumo stance As a National MMA champion and member of the German MMA Federation (GEMMAF) National Amateur Team, Dorny first competed under the IMMAF banner in 2015 at the IMMAF World Amateur Championships in Las Vegas, USA. The German Featherweight competitor earned a Bronze medal at the World Championships and followed up with a second IMMAF Bronze in 2016 at the European Open Championships in Walsall, England. Despite her strong background in Judo, Dorny has shown enthusiasm for striking and bringing a high volume approach to bouts by staying busy on her feet, and with a multitude of kicks. Dorny’s latest Amateur MMA contest (pictured below) took place in Brandenburg, Germany, on April 9 where she secured victory via unanimous decision.
