Italian Championships sets records for MMA in Italy

FIGMMA) has informed the IMMAF that 281 amateur athletes have registered to compete at the 7th Italian Championship of Mixed Martial Arts, a record setting figure for MMA in Italy. FIGMMA oversaw a preliminary qualification stage on March 12 with 2015 IMMAF World Amateur Champion Micol DiSegni in attendance. The National Championship tournament takes place on April 17 in Rome and will be the first competition with ADIDAS as the official sponsor and technical supplier for Amateur MMA competition in Italy. IMMAF.org reported last week that the Italian governing body had secured a landmark deal, presenting ADIDAS as the official sponsor of FIGMMA’s National Amateur MMA Team of Italy. In accordance with FIGMMA regulation for Amateur MMA, athletes will compete in categories divided by age, class, and skill division.

67 athletes will compete in the A Division to win advancement to the National MMA Team Tryout Finals, of which will be held in Rome on May 7 to decide who will feature in the Italian Team ahead of the 2016 IMMAF World Championships in Las Vegas, USA. All competitors in the Beginner divisions will fight with face protector headgear. In addition, random anti-doping testing will be performed by the Italian National Anti-Doping Agency.
