The Comissão Atlética Portuguesa de Mixed Martial Arts (CAPMMA) will begin the selection process for athletes to represent Portugal at the IMMAF European Championships of Amateur MMA in November, taking place in Birmingham, England. The first phase of the National Tryouts will take place on October 11th, starting at 2pm, and will be part of a multi-sports event in Portugal, the POWEREXPO, at the Complexo Municipal da Maia. The CAPMMA will simultaneously promote the debut of Portugal’s National Open, under the aegis of FPLA – the Portuguese Federation of Amateur Wrestling, and in partnership with POWEREXPO, CAGE FIGHTERS and BUDDHA Fightwear, thus promoting the acquisition of experience for future candidates to represent Portugal. In a statement following Portugal’s participation in the 2014 IMMAF World Championships of Amateur MMA in Las Vegas, and again in July of 2015, the CAPMMA outlined its belief that the 2015 European Championships will consolidate Portugal as one of the top MMA nations under IMMAF’s banner. Among the 47 IMMAF affiliated nations, Portugal are ranked 21st in the World Rankings. The CAPMMA heads are pleased with what they feel is a worthy position given that Portugal travelled to this year’s World Championships in Las Vegas, USA, with a smaller team of three athletes. The CAPMMA plan on taking advantage of the European Championships’ geographical proximity with a larger delegation, due to the much shorter trip to Birmingham, England. The pre-registration takes place from September 9 on the CAPMMA website, for more information visit www.capmma.org. You can follow CAPMMA on Twitter @CAPMMA_Portugal
