This weekend Stage 2 of the FIGMMA Italian national team trials takes place in Rome on July 15. The second stage is to be hosted by the Hung Mun Martial Society and welcomes representing athletes from registered FIGMMA clubs as they work their way towards a place on the Italian national amateur team. In past years Italy has been among the world’s most decorated national teams with athletes frequently making their way to the podium. At the 2016 World Championships a squad of 10 athletes with experienced national champions made their way to Las Vegas. The 2017 IMMAF World Championships take place from 12-19 November in Manama, Bahrain. Familiar faces bidding to secure their place at the 2017 Amateur MMA World Championships include: Men’s Lightweight: Francesco Spinola – 2016 World Championships veteran and three-time European Open team member (2015, 2016, 2017). Men’s Welterweight: Daniele Dell’otto – 2016 World & European Open veteran at middleweight. Men’s Welterweight: Ehsan Ghandchiler – 2015 World Championships veteran. Light-Heavyweight: Daniele Matiddi – 2017 European Open bronze medalist at heavyweight. Women’s Flyweight: Ilaria Norcia – 2016 World Championships veteran and two-time European Open bronze medalist (2016, 2017).
