IMMAF CEO Offers Condolences for Death of Yang Jian Bing & Comments on Lethal Weight Cutting

News of the tragic death of Chinese flyweight Yang Jian Bing today has sent shockwaves through the MMA community. Bing’s seventh pro fight at One Championship 35  in the Philippines was cancelled on Thursday, “due to Yang’s severe dehydration from attempting to make weight. Yang Jian Bing has suffered from dehydration and suspected heat stroke. He has been transported to the hospital where he is undergoing intensive rehydration treatment.” (See Local reports suggest Bing was unresponsive on arrival at San Juan De Dios Hospital in Pasay, with citing a hospital statement confirming death linked to extreme weight-cutting. On behalf of IMMAF, CEO Densign White commented: “First of all IMMAF offers condolences to the family and friends of Yang Jan Bing. There is speculation that his death may be related to his weight cutting before a fight which resulted in complications. If this is indeed the case it is not just very sad, but also brings into focus once again the need to educate athletes around weight management issues. Those of us that are administrators of the sport also need to look at what more we can do in terms of weight management policy to ensure that this kind of thing never happens again.”
