FIGMMA: Italian National Championship Results

The 7th Italian Championship of Mixed Martial Arts took place in Rome on Sunday, April 17, with a record of 281 competitors and 67 fighters in the Amateur A-Division. Winners of the A-Division bouts secured their spot in FIGMMA’s final National MMA Team Trials that will take place back in Rome on May 7, where Italy’s National Team will be decided ahead of the 2016 IMMAF World Championships of Amatuer MMA. The event was hosted by The Italian Grappling and Mixed Martial Arts Federation (FIGMMA) and featured random anti-doping tests performed by the Italian National Anti-Doping Agency. This year’s Italian Championship was the first competition featuring ADIDAS as the official sponsor and kit provider to FIGMMA.

During the opening ceremony, President Saverio Longo presented awards for Athlete of the Year 2015 to Marco Zannetti (IMMAF Silver medal at European Open Championship and Bronze at World Championship), Micol Di Segni (IMMAF Gold medal at the World Championship) and Lucrezia Ria (IMMAF Gold medal at the World Championship). Also attending the ceremony was Alessio Di Chirico, IMMAF world champion in 2014, and now the only Italian competitor currently on the UFC roster. In addition, Carlo Pedersoli was also in attendance; another former member of the Italian National Team who is now professional and fighting in Road to Bellator. Winners of the A-Division Italian Championship included flyweight Ilaria Norcia and bantamweight Arziko Bregu in the Women’s divisions. In the Men’s bantamweight category Davide Baggieri upset current National Team member Marco Zannetti, submitting him with a triangle choke in the final. They will meet up again in the finals of the National MMA Team Trials next month. Other gold medal winners included: Orion Lombardi – featherweight Alessio Cocco – lightweight Riccardo Schwarz – welterweight Alessandro Costantini – middleweight Simone Cancelli – light-heavyweight Anastasi Paolo – heavyweight Gerardo Manfredi – superheavyweight.
