UFC 205: Alvarez vs. McGregor
October 15 @ 8:24 am
The UFC’s long awaited New York debut is upon us; UFC 205 is widely considered to be the greatest card in the promotion’s history, boasting a trio of world championship headline bouts, taking place at the iconic Madison Square Garden Arena.
In the evening’s main event, Ireland’s Conor McGregor aims to shock the world and make history as the first UFC fighter two hold championships in two weight divisions simultaneously. The reigning 145lb featherweight champion will compete in the UFC’s 155lb division for the first time when he challenges reigning lightweight king Eddie Alvarez who hails from the famed fighting town of Philadelphia.
Also defending his title on the night will be the newly crowned UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who aims to complete a memorable first defence of the 170lb crown following his shock KO victory over former champion Robbie Lawler back at UFC 201 on July 30. Woodley takes on no.2 ranked welterweight Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson who has produced showcase after showcase of his American kickboxing prowess to develop a 7-fight win streak since his first and only loss in 2012. Thompson’s last two victories include a TKO stoppage of former champion Johny Hendricks, and a Unanimous Decision over Canadian prodigy Rory MacDonald.
Poland’s Joanna Jędrzejczyk will be in action as the exciting 115lb Muay Thai specialist defends her UFC Strawweight title in an all Polish collision against no.1 contender Karolina Kowalkiewicz. The undefeated Kowalkiewicz (10-0) earned herself a shot at the gold with victory over the highly rated Rose Namajunas. The champion also remains undefeated at 12-0 and has completed three successful title defences already since her destruction of former Strawweight queen Carla Esparza, in March of 2015.
